TRAM

1872 was the year that saw the birth of the first tramway in Bizkaia. The line Bilbao-Las Arenas was a pioneer, but soon after, in 1876, he joined the trip for the left side, Bilbao-Santurtzi. It is this journey, years later, in 1889, the first electrified route across Spain, opening the electric tram as we know today: the means of transport clean ecological and silent for excellence.
Following an intense development due to the industrial revolution and its impact on the city, by 1920 the network of trams in Bilbao reached 109 km., with the Arenal as a hub for the twelve tram lines existing. However, the crisis in later years lead to the definitive disappearance in 1964 of the carriage-shifted by the new 'trolleybus', the electric bus.
In late 2002, nearly four decades after the last of those trams, the city works and after 3 years, the mythical bell ringing again through the streets of the town, which fell back into the age of ecological and sustainable public transport.
